Emma Hill: In the Pink
If you think wild horses would not drag you to a fashion show — think again! Two ponies galloping through Claridge's Hotel, held (just) on reins by a uniformed bell boy marked the finale of a witty oh-so-British show of handbags from Emma Hill, the woman who made Mulberry bags an object of desire.
Now at the head of new brand Hill & Friends, working alongside Georgia Fendley, Emma put the best of British of show: craftsmanship illuminated with humour.
As models dressed as uniformed hotel staff walked out carrying bags colourful or streamlined, always woman-friendly, the presentation was in phase with the 'in the pink' set. That meant a long table laden with (pink) flowers, smoothies and biscuits. Emma's young son on a hotel trolley sent the fledgling brand off to a fine, funny and funky start.
House of Holland: Psychedelic Trip
It could have been retro downtown Las Vegas — or even today's Coachella Festival — when Henry Holland sent a singer out to walk the circular, sand-covered floor of a historic former music hall.
The House of Holland is addicted to pattern and colour, but the familiar funky clothes had a psychedelic edge for the summer 2016 season — especially when beetle brooches seemed to crawl over the tropical Safari prints.
Although the base of the collection was sportswear and dresses, Holland added something else: British irony. Think cute patterned dresses set off with sandals with wafting feather quills; or dresses striped like seafront deck chairs, criss-crossed with shoe laces.
It was not a show to mark the course of fashion — but a cheery summer romp
